The Thruway carries a heavy truck load through the city and the patched right lanes shed material constantly, while the parkways add their own supply of grit on curves where drivers sit close together. Central Park Avenue's stop-start retail traffic produces low-speed chips all year. Winter is the other factor: Yonkers gets sanded and salted heavily because of the hills, and loose sand behaves exactly like gravel once traffic spreads it. Trade vehicles here also carry loads that shift, and an unsecured ladder or length of pipe sliding forward on a hard stop has ended more rear windows than any road hazard. Older vehicles suffer perished mouldings that trap water at the glass edge.
Take the Major Deegan Expressway south from Yonkers into the Bronx, stay with it past the Cross Bronx, then follow the Bruckner Expressway eastbound and come off at Hunts Point Avenue. Garrison Avenue is a short turn from the exit. Half an hour on a good run. If you drive anything with commercial plates, remember the Saw Mill and the Cross County are closed to you, so the Deegan or the Thruway is the route regardless of what a map app suggests.
