The warehouse blocks of Port Morris push cargo vans out onto Bruckner Boulevard all morning, and by the time they finish a route through Manhattan and come back over the Third Avenue Bridge, most of them have collected something. We see a lot of sliding-door glass, rear barn-door panes, and windshields that took a hit somewhere on the bridge approaches. If a van is out of service, a route goes uncovered, so a courier van with a cracked windshield goes to the front of the queue here.
The residential side of Mott Haven brings its own steady stream. Cars parked overnight on 138th Street or off Willis Avenue lose a door window now and then, and that is a job we can usually turn around the same day at $200 to $450 for most side and rear tempered glass, cleanup included. Bridge approaches are the main culprit here. Steel gratings, expansion joints and the patched pavement on the ramps shake loose grit that finds the car behind you, and the constant heavy-truck load along Bruckner Boulevard keeps the road surface broken up faster than it gets repaved. Vans that idle in the warehouse aprons pick up stone chips at low speed, which sounds harmless until winter arrives and a defroster blast turns a two-millimetre chip into a crack across the sweep of the wiper. Break-ins on the quieter industrial blocks account for a fair share of our door and quarter glass work. And because so much of the local fleet is high-roof cargo vans, the glass we replace is often a big flat rear pane rather than a windshield.
The simplest route is Bruckner Boulevard eastbound. Pick it up anywhere from Willis Avenue or 138th Street, stay on it through Port Morris and past the Oak Point yards, then come off at Hunts Point Avenue and turn onto Garrison. Ten to fifteen minutes without traffic, and it works for a box truck as easily as a sedan since nothing on that route bans commercial plates. Usually yes. A stocked windshield takes about half an hour of actual fitting, then the urethane needs roughly an hour to reach safe drive-away time.
