The expressway is the story. Traffic on the Cross Bronx runs below street level through a trench with retaining walls, and the combination of heavy truck volume, constant patching and poor drainage keeps a supply of loose aggregate on the road surface. Anything that gets thrown up there stays airborne for a surprising distance, and cars on the service roads and the overpasses catch it. Then there are the potholes: freeze and thaw work on pavement that never gets a rest, and a hard drop into a hole flexes the body enough to run an existing crack further across the glass. The cleanest run is Southern Boulevard or Boston Road south to the Sheridan, then down onto Bruckner Boulevard and east to the Hunts Point Avenue exit, with Garrison Avenue a short turn beyond it. Fifteen minutes when the Cross Bronx is not backing traffic onto the local streets. From the western side of Tremont, take Webster Avenue or Third Avenue south and pick up the Bruckner near Port Morris instead. Everything on those routes is open to commercial plates.
